JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A pedestrian is dead after being hit on the Arlington Expressway at Arlington Road Tuesday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. on Arlington Expressway westbound just before the Arlington Road overpass.

According to JSO, the man walked into oncoming traffic and was hit by a Chevrolet Tahoe going westbound in the inside lane of the expressway.

A little while later, an off-duty officer, who was heading into work, was flagged down by a witness to the crash.

JSO said the deputy saw the Tahoe further down the road and a dark object laying across the center of both lanes. JSO said the deputy tried to avoid crashing into the pedestrian but the wheel of the car ran over him.

The Arlington Expressway is a limited access roadway with raised center median barriers and fencing to prevent pedestrians from trying to cross the expressway.

The roadway was closed for some time of Tuesday morning but is now open.

This is the 119th traffic fatality in Duval County this year and the 31st involving a pedestrian, according to the sheriff's office.
