ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla — A 52-year-old man died in a crash that backed up traffic for hours on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County Friday morning into the afternoon, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The FHP crash report states that at 10:30 a.m., the unidentified man from Port Orange, Fla., was traveling northbound on I-95 in the left shoulder lane at mile marker 321. While doing so, another vehicle that was unoccupied, was disabled and faced north on I-95 in the same same emergency lane.
Next, the report states that the man failed to "maintain" his sedan in the lane, thus causing his vehicle to hit the disabled vehicle's rear bumper/tailgate.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene when first responders arrived, the report states.
All I-95 northbound lanes were closed near mile marker 321 for hours. And although the crash happened on I-95 North, southbound traffic was being affected, as vehicles were backed up past International Golf Parkway. On the northbound side, congestion was backed up close to the St. Augustine Premium Outlets.
