VILANO BEACH, Fla. — Part of A1A Coastal Highway near Vilano Beach was washed out Wednesday and the road is down to one lane. Th87e road is reopened out of 4:49 p.m.
The Florida Department of Transportation temporary closure was implemented to allow FDOT Maintenance crews to place sandbags for erosion mitigation related to recent severe weather.
The ocean waves washed out the dunes and broke onto the road on AIA.
The area of the road that is experiencing flooding is near a familiar landmark -- the famous Vilano 'Blue House.' Crews are onsite outside the house, putting down sand.
The First Coast has been under coastal flood advisory throughout the weekend and into Monday.
During Hurricane Nicole, which impacted the First Coast as a tropical storm on Nov. 10, part of A1A collapsed.
Residents in Vilano Beach were asked to stay in their homes and could not get out through A1A all day. Crews were able to construct a temporary roadway in extraordinary time, and residents were able to exit by 10:30 p.m. that night.
