4 killed in crash on University Boulevard identified

The five people inside the vehicle when it crashed were immigrants from Columbia that moved to Jacksonville this year.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — First Coast News is learning more details about the four people who died after a crash on University Boulevard last month.

The crash happened on the same road as another deadly crash earlier that month. Now, some business managers in the area are calling for increased safety on what they describe as a dangerous curve.

Five people were inside the car at the time of the crash, four of them lost their lives. One was sent to the hospital with serious injuries. Police say the driver was speeding and lost control at a curve in the road.

Multiple GoFundMe pages have been set up for the victims, who organizers say were immigrants from Columbia and had moved to Jacksonville this year.

Jeyda Ozturk is the manager at a gas station near the crash site and says state officials need to do more to make the road safer.

“It is dangerous because people are speeding… and I don’t think they understand the road curves to the left so they are not able to tell the road is not actually straight forward," Ozturk said.

Ten days before that deadly crash, two people were killed in a separate accident in the same location.

Police also say that driver was speeding and lost control when the road curved.

“I was surprised because I didn’t think it would happen so soon again," Ozturk said.

Ozturk hopes that after the multiple fatalities, something is done to help make the roadway safer and deter drivers from speeding. “Maybe put some speed bumps out there or maybe like a signage, like something, cause it’s not getting any better."
