28-year-old Fleming Island woman killed in crash on U.S. 17 in Clay County

The 28-year-old driver did not stop at a traffic light and crashed into the back of a pickup truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A 28-year-old Fleming Island woman was killed after a crash Sunday morning on U.S. 17 near Pace Island Drive in Clay County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 5:26 a.m. Sunday, a sports utility vehicle was traveling south in the center lane of U.S. 17 approaching Pace Island Trace.

At the same time, a pickup truck was stopped at a traffic light in the center lane at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Pace Island Trace.

The 28-year-old driver of the sports utility vehicle did not stop at the traffic light and crashed into the back of the pickup truck, according to FHP.

The vehicle overturned multiple times, killing the driver. An FHP crash report said the 28-year-old killed was not wearing a seatbelt.

The 39-year-old Hilliard man driving the pickup truck was not hurt in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt, the crash report said.

The crash shut down all southbound lanes of U.S. 17 at Pace Island Trace Sunday morning causing backups for drivers in the area.

This deadly crash comes just one day after a head-on crash on U.S. 17 in Nassau County killed a 54-year-old Fernandina Beach man and critically injured a 61-year-old Jacksonville man Saturday morning.
