The 'best' meteor shower of the year is peaking tonight. Here's how to view it

The Perseid meteor shower is highly anticipated because of the rate of shooting stars it can produce, with the possibility of reaching 50 to 100 meteors per hour.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The annual Perseid meteor shower will peak overnight Sunday into Monday, giving stargazers across the globe the chance to experience what is considered the best meteor shower of the year.

Bringing "swift and bright meteors," Perseids is known for leaving long "wakes" of light and color as they streak across the night sky, according to NASA

The yearly shower is highly anticipated because of the rate of shooting stars it can produce, with the possibility of reaching 50 to 100 meteors per hour. The Perseids are also known for producing fireballs, or larger explosions of light compared to an average meteor streak.

The Perseids are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere during Monday pre-dawn hours, but it's possible to view meteors as early as 10 p.m. Sunday, NASA said.

For Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia residents, there will be mostly clear skies from late Sunday into early Monday; the perfect conditions to view a meteor shower.

Find somewhere dark, away from the city or street lights, with little light pollution. Viewers should let their eyes adjust to the night sky, avoiding cellphone screens or other bright lights for the best chance of seeing a shooting star.

If you don't get a chance to view the Perseids overnight Sunday, don't worry. The meteor shower has been visible since mid-July and will last into late August.
