JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — People from around the world are excited about sport climbing at this year's Summer Games.
"Speed climbing is going to have its own Olympic medal, and then boulder and lead climbing are going to be combined into general climbing," said Joshua Ward, a sport climbing instructor at Edge Rock Gym in Jacksonville.
Ward has been climbing for a decade.
Speed climbers are competing for the fastest time, but bouldering is a little different.
"Bouldering is more of the problem-solving part of the sport. How far you can get on that boulder. There will be four different problems for the athletes to solve, and they will be awarded 25 points per problem," Ward said.
And lead climbing is separate from Bouldering.
"The higher you go, the more points you get. It caps out at 100 points," Ward explained.
There will be four events: women's boulder and lead, women's speed, men's boulder and lead, and men's speed.
"There's no weight classes in climbing, there's no size category, which is another cool thing about climbing," Ward said.
