Multiple reports say Jacksonville may be getting a minor-league hockey team all our own.
14News in Evansville, Ind. is citing sources who claim the Owensboro, Ky. Icemen were sold to a Jacksonville group Tuesday. 14News also reports Jacksonville has been looking for a hockey team for some time.
This wouldn't be the first time northeast Florida had a hockey club: from 1995 to 2000, the Jacksonville Lizard Kings were a part of the East Coast Hockey League. The team lost $2.2 million over four years and wasn't viable.
The Lizard Kings came after the Jacksonville Bullets (RIP by 1996) and before the Jacksonville Barracudas (RIP in 2008).
The Barracudas won the World Hockey Association 2 championship in 2003.
Jacksonville's been without a professional hockey team since 2008.
We've put in calls to the Jacksonville Sports Council and are waiting to hear back. No word on when the team would move here, begin playing or what they'd be called. Could we see the Jacksonville Icemen?
