JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Jacksonville Jaguars are planning to add some punch to their offensive backfield, according to an ESPN report.
The team is expected to sign former New York Jets running back Chris Ivory at the start of free agency Wednesday afternoon, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Ivory (6-foot, 222 pounds) is coming off a career year. He eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career in his final season with the Jets. A six-year veteran, Ivory has started 30 games.
He has collected 4,031 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns since going undrafted in 2010. At 27, Ivory is likely to split backfield duties with last year's second round pick, T.J. Yeldon.
Ivory provides a goal line back for an offense that sorely lacked one last season. As a member of the Jets, Ivory ran for 26 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries against the Jaguars this past November.
Ivory brings playoff and Pro Bowl experience to a backfield that features little outside of Yeldon. Denard Robinson, Corey Grant, Joe Banyard and Jonas Gray are likely to battle it out in training camp for one or two roster spots.
