Providence's Tyler Callihan selected 85th overall in 2019 MLB Draft

Tyler Callihan, former Providence slugger and a member of the USA U18 National Team, is officially a MLB draftee.

The wait is over. 

After falling to Day Two, the Cincinnati Reds selected Providence's Tyler Callihan with the 85th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. The senior infielder is the highest-drafted player in the Providence School's history. 

A South Carolina signee, Callihan slugged 12 home runs, six doubles and 36 RBIs. Callihan primarily has played third base, but could play second base or catcher at the next level. The five-year starter batted nearly .500 his senior year. He also served as the Stallions' closer, notching six saves and posting a 1.08 ERA. Callihan struck out 40 batters in 26 innings. 

Providence finished the 2019 season with a record of 18-9. 

According to Spotrac.com, Callihan is expected to earn a slotted bonus of $710,700 as the 85th overall pick. MLB.com had rated Callihan its 35th best overall prospect.
