Ryan Murphy earns bronze medal for Team USA in men's 100-meter backstroke at Paris Olympics

Murphy, who attended The Bolles School in Jacksonville, placed third with a time of 52.39 seconds behind Italy's Thomas Ceccon and China's Xu Jiayu respectively.

PARIS, France — Team USA swim star Ryan Murphy earned his seventh Olympic medal after placing third in the men's 100-meter backstroke final Tuesday in Paris.

Murphy, who attended The Bolles School in Jacksonville, placed third with a time of 52.39 seconds behind Italy's Thomas Ceccon and China's Xu Jiayu respectively.

Ceccon swam a time of 52.00 seconds and Jiayu was close behind with a time of 52.32 seconds.

Murphy, who holds the Olympic Record in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 51.85, is looking to make history by becoming the first male swimmer to win medals in three consecutive games in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke.

Murphy will vie for a spot in the 200-meter backstroke final on Wednesday.
