PARIS, France — Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon had her silver medal reinstated after she was initially disqualified in the women's 5000-meter race.
In the final laps of the race, there was a back and forth of pushing between the reigning world champion Kipyegon and world record holder Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, as Tsegay tried to move to the front in the final 800 meters.
Officials disqualified Kipyegon because of the altercation. Kipyegon's Kenyan teammate Beatrice Chebet pulled ahead in the final 50 meters and won the gold with a winning time of 14:28.56.
Kenya appealed the disqualification and the disqualification was overturned.
When Kipyegon was initially disqualified, the Netherlands' Sifan Hassan took the silver and Italy's Nadia Battocletti took bronze. The appeal pushed Hassan back down to third and Battocletti did not medal.
