Caeleb Dressel and Ryan Murphy qualify for 2024 Paris Olympics

Dressel, a Clay High and University of Florida alum, qualified for the 100m freestyle and Murphy, the Bolles alum, qualified for the 100m backstroke.

PARIS, France — Two swimmers with local ties are making a return to the Olympics.

Ryan Murphy and Caeleb Dressel both began their Olympic careers at Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and they suited up again for the Toyko Olympics that took place in 2021. Murphy, a Bolles School alum who attended Cal, has four gold medals. 

On Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Murphy was the top finisher for the Men's 100m backstroke, posting a 52:22 time. Dressel finished third in the 100m freestyle with a 47:53 time, behind Jack Alexy (47:47) and Chris Guiliano (47:34). The top four finishers of the 100m trials qualfied. Both Dressel and Murphy are expected to swim in relays.

Dressel, the Green Cove Springs native who went to Clay High School and the University of Florida, has seven gold medals. He also trained at the Bolles School.

Murphy is the current holder of the Olympic records for the 100m backstroke and 4x100m backstroke in the medley relay, the latter is also a world record. Dressel has six current world records. 

He will be in competition for the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.
