Seven Jaguars free agents are still on the market

While teams are typically inclined to take fliers on even the lowliest contributors from recent playoffs teams, the Jaguars still have a group of free agents left on the market.

The shine of the Jaguars' impressive 2017 season has yet to rub off on a handful of former players on the free agent market. While teams are typically inclined to take fliers on even the lowliest contributors from recent playoffs teams, the Jaguars still have a group of free agents left on the market.

While the group doesn't consist of notable names, Jaguars fans may recognize their contributions from the recent campaign.

Peyton Thompson

Position: Free Safety/Cornerback

Jaguars Tenure: 2014-2017

2017 Stats: 12 tackles

Thoughts: Coming off his first full 16-game season, Thompson remains in the free agent pool. A versatile defensive back, who can play all five secondary positions, Thompson is also known for being a solid special teams player. Of all the players on this list, his inclusion is probably the strangest, as he is cheap, versatile and has special teams upside. Thompson should receive some looks during training camp due to his four-year stint with the Jaguars.

Arrelious Benn

Position: Wide Receiver

Jaguars Tenure: 2015-2017

2017 Stats: One catch, 12 receiving yards

Thoughts: While Benn plays wide receiver, he was known for his special teams prowess in Jacksonville. During his two seasons of active duty, Benn established himself as one of the best special teams players on the roster. The veteran wide receiver overcame several potential career-ending injuries to make it onto the Jaguars' 2016 53-man roster. His story is fantastic but his time with the Jaguars ended with another stint on injured reserve last year. Perhaps Benn's market will heat up once training camp starts, as special teams coordinators seek out improved talent for their units.

Matt Overton

Position: Long Snapper

Jaguars Tenure: 2017

2017 Stats: Nine games played

Thoughts: The former Pro Bowl long snapper signed with the Jaguars after starter Carson Tinker suffered a torn ACL during training camp. Overton worked the first nine games of the season before being shut down due to a season-ending shoulder dislocation. A six-year veteran, Overton may get another shot at a job if there's a Tinker-like injury elsewhere during training camp.

Mychal Rivera

Position: Tight End

Jaguars Tenure: 2017

2017 Stats: N/A

Thoughts: Rivera arrived in Jacksonville last season with some tempered hype. Viewed as a solid pass-receiving complement to veteran Marcedes Lewis, Rivera was expected to see some decent playing time during his first season in Jacksonville. However, an undisclosed injury hindered Rivera's output during training camp and he was eventually placed on injured reserve, ending his season before it had even started. The Jaguars declined his second-year option earlier this offseason and Rivera's market has seemingly been quiet ever since.

Recently Released But Unsigned

Brad Nortman

Position: Punter

Jaguars Tenure: 2016-17

2017 Stats: 87 punts, 44.1 yards per punt, 38.9 net yards per punt

Thoughts: Nortman had a very inconsistent two seasons in Jacksonville before getting booted after the NFL Draft. Nortman struggled to find a rhythm throughout last season, as his performances were heroic one week and head-scratching the next. Now entering his seventh season, Nortman should be invited to a camp to compete with an incumbent starter. Seventh-round rookie Logan Cooke has replaced Nortman in Jacksonville.

Colin Holba

Position: Long Snapper

Jaguars Tenure: 2017

2017 Stats: 10 games played (including the playoffs)

Thoughts: The Jaguars recently waived Holba after their mandatory minicamp to make room for fellow long snapper Andrew East. Holba should get another look in the NFL due to his sixth-round draft pedigree and his 10 games of experience. The then-rookie replaced Overton after he became the second long snapper of the year to suffer a season-ending injury. At 23 years old, Holba should land in a camp somewhere next month.

Jaelen Strong

Position: Wide Receiver

Jaguars Tenure: 2017

2017 Stats: 3 catches, 38 receiving yards

Thoughts: The Jaguars took a flier on Strong when he was waived by a division rival - the Houston Texans - after a one-game suspension. Strong was eventually moved to the practice squad but finally received his active roster shot during a Week 16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Strong contributed three catches and 38 receiving yards before tearing his ACL in his Jaguars debut.

Strong was among the several Jaguars wide receivers who suffered major injuries last season and is still recovering from surgery. It's likely that he would miss a decent portion of this season given the timing of recovery from a late-year knee injury of that magnitude. The Jaguars are stacked at wide receiver, so they decided to move on from the former third-round pick.
