JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville Jaguars legend will join the Black College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
Rashean Mathis played 10 seasons with the Jaguars from 2003-2012. He later had a three-year stint with the Detroit Lions. The 2003 second round pick made the Pro Bowl in 2006 after an eight interception season.
He amassed 574 tackles and 32 interceptions in his career, scoring four touchdowns. His best game in teal came in the 2007 Wild Card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers where he picked off Ben Roethlisberger twice in the 31-29 win on the road.
Mathis is the Jaguars' career interception leader with 30, and played 137 games for the franchise.
According to the BCFHOF, Mathis hit the following milestones and accolades at Bethune-Cookman University:
- Three-time All-MEAC First-Team honoree (2000, 2001 and 2002)
- 2002 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year
- Holds the FCS record for most interceptions in a career (31) and season (14)
- Holds the FCS record for most yards on interception returns in a career (682) and season (455)
Besides Mathis, Henry Dyer (Grambling State University), Jacquay Nunnally (Florida A&M University), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Tennessee State University), Jay “Sky” Walker (Howard University) and Coach Fred “Pop” Long (Wiley College) will be inducted into the class.
The Class of 2025 will be honored at the 16th Annual Black College Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 7 in Atlanta.
