Jacksonville Jaguars star player changes his last name

This Jaguars pro-bowler will now have a hyphenated last name.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Jaguars pro-bowl linebacker Josh Allen announced his new hyphenated last name Tuesday.

The team's sack leader last year announced on social media he is adding "Hines" to the back of his No. 41 jersey, which will now read Joshua Hines-Allen.

Hines-Allen said he has a rich history of athletic ability in his family, many who go by the same hyphenated name, and the change is to pay homage to that.

Hines-Allen will host a jersey exchange event in Jacksonville for fans who have purchased his No. 41 jersey, according to the NFL's website.

"I've always been a Hines, and legacy is forever," Hines-Allen said in the video below. "It's going to be a surreal moment the first time I hear my name announced."

Hines-Allen, who broke the Jaguars single-season sack record in 2023 with 17.5 sacks, has a sister who plays for the WNBA's Washington Mystics, Myisha Hines-Allen. His two other sisters played college basketball.

Hines-Allen's uncle, Gregory Hines, is in the Hampton University Athletics Hall of Fame and was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the 1983 NBA draft, according to NFL's website. His other uncle, Keith Hines, played basketball at Montclair State.

Hines-Allen, often regarded by Jaguars fans as "The better Josh Allen," may no longer be confused with the Bills quarterback of the same name.

The Jaguars re-signed Hines-Allen to a new five year, $150 million contract this offseason, making him one of the highest paid players in the league.
