First Coast News spoke to a neurologist Monday, breaking down Trevor Lawrence's brain injury.
Dr. Rajul Parikh says concussions need to be treated seriously as they can lead to long term effects.
We also spoke to someone working at a popular restaurant when his customers saw what happened.
“I have never in my life heard anything as quiet and serene as heart wrenching, like you could feel like scratching the nails on the chalk board," said Rashad Graham. He works at Island Wing Grill and Bar on the south side of Jacksonville. He was working the bar when the tackle on Trevor Lawrence happened Sunday in the Jaguars game against the Houston Texas. He says it the worst hit he has ever seen.
A lot of people were upset. Others, like neurologist Rajul Parikh, were concerned..
Parikh explained the seriousness of Lawrence's brain injury and broke down his body movements after the hit. Specifically his arm movements which is know as "fencing."
“I think what likely happened yesterday, what we see on the video and the 'fencing' it shows us that he had a brief loss of consciousness. His brain got hit hard enough to lose his consciousness and that just shows it was a severe side effect," said Parikh.
Parikh says fencing is one of the red flags parents, coaches or athletes should look for to determine how serious the brain injury is. He broke down other signs to look for.
“They’re having slurring of the speech, or the loss or change in their vision, or any loss of the hearing or change of the hearing," said Parikh.
Parkih emphasized the importance of taking the first concussion seriously. If it is not handled correctly, it could lead to long term damage.
For fans like Graham, he says the tackle never should have happened in the first place.
“I’ve seen it before, this isn’t the first hit I have seen like that. Like I said, those hit’s aren’t supposed to happen," said Graham.
Parkih if someone suffers a concussion, you need to hydrate, get good sleep, check your balance and follow concussion protocols.
