JACKSONVILLE, Fla. โ The Edward Waters women's tennis team has just concluded its inaugural season with a 3-16 record.
A significant part of the struggle on the court stemmed from difficulties with recruiting before the program truly commenced.
"A lot of girls backed out because they said we don't have a team. And I was like 'hey, this is the first year.' But a lot of times, people look at the history of our own programs and that's what they base things off of," said head coach Marc Atkinson.
In response to recruiting challenges, coach Atkinson made some adjustments and introduced soccer players to tennis.
"We made an impression because considering what we had, other coaches and players were still impressed even by the soccer girls because they picked up really fast. They improved throughout the season too," said Aalisha Alexis, the Tigers' #1 singles and doubles player.
However, one of the most significant learning curves occurred outside the lines.
"Just learning the NCAA compliance and making sure I follow everything to the tee because I don't want to be that coach that knicks his program because he's not following the proper protocols," said Atkinson. "So, I reached out to my compliance director. I text him like hey, can I do this? Can I do that?"
Coach Atkinson emphasized that securing legitimate tennis players would immediately help the team move in the right direction, while also raising awareness about the program.
"We are going to have a lot more community events starting next year. We are going to start doing USTA tournaments, UTR Tournaments, we are probably going to do some kids day before the home matches next year. Just to show the community like hey, we have a tennis program. We are here now. So come support. Come show love," said Atkinson.
Coach Atkinson mentioned having some recruits he hopes will commit soon, which should aid the Tigers in becoming more competitive.
Overall, Atkinson expressed immense pride in his team because they fulfilled all his expectations throughout the season.
