JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — As the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp prepare for Opening Day, they have introduced new concession items for the 2024 season.
For those who are vegetarian, vegan, or simply don't eat meat, the organization will offer plant-based Impossible meat hot dogs, burgers, and even chicken nuggets.
Fans who enjoy strolling during the game can now indulge in walking tacos, designed to be easily eaten on the go.
For dessert enthusiasts, there is now a churro sundae. But regardless of what you choose to eat, the Jumbo Shrimp's items will remain affordable for all fans.
Now, whether it's the new items hitting the concession stands or preparing the numerous other aspects to kick off the season, it takes a significant amount of effort from the people behind the scenes.
This offseason had a unique feel, particularly due to the substantial construction and changes underway at 121 Financial Ballpark, as the Jumbo Shrimp announced Project NEXT, bringing about renovations worth approximately $31 million.
Yet, despite all the ongoing developments, Jumbo Shrimp owner Ken Babby felt a sense of normalcy this time around.
"In the past, we could have talked about the pandemic and uncertainty; however, this has, in many ways, been the first normal offseason we've had. We knew when opening day was on the calendar. We knew the ballpark projects were underway and will continue to be underway. It'll be fun to show that change to fans when they are in the building tomorrow. So, the normalcy of it at some degree feels refreshing," said Babby. "And, people that work in baseball, we're routine-oriented creatures. We like knowing what time we're getting to the ballpark. We love knowing what time the gates open. You smell the sausages cooking on the flattop, the kegs rolling in, and you miss those things during the offseason."
As for Jumbo Shrimp Executive Vice President and General Manager Harold Craw, he remarked that the most challenging aspect of preparing for the season is simply awaiting the first pitch on Opening Day, allowing the organization to witness the culmination of their hard work.
"There's an exhale moment, but there's also a kind of euphoric moment when people are in the stadium, they are in their seats. You see families enjoying themselves, joking with each other. And that runs throughout the season because the season changes. In April, there are certain things we look for. In July, I'm excited because of Independence Day going on. So, it has its specific times, but there's an exhale moment followed by this is going to be fun," said Craw.
Opening Day for the Jumbo Shrimp is March 29 at 7:05 p.m., as they host the Gwinnett Stripers at 121 Financial Ballpark.
