JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — After an accident he called a "freak thing" Monday, resulting in a high ankle sprain, Trevor Lawrence walked into a press conference Wednesday. He did not have a boot on his ankle, nor was he using crutches, and appeared to be able to walk well on the injury.
"I feel a lot better than I would've thought I'd feel," he said. "I'm very fortunate, I'm thankful that it wasn't a worse injury, like I kind of thought it was out on the field."
The accident happened when the Jaguars' Walker Little stepped on Lawrence's ankle, causing it to twist.
He credited his trainer, prayers and well wishes for his swift recovery. "Thankfully it wasn't anything serious, but that stuff means a lot, and it worked. I'm feeling good."
He said he doesn't know if he will play Sunday's game against Cleveland yet, and the situation will be monitored day-by-day.
"I'll never put myself or the team in a position to where we're at a higher risk, or we're not gonna play our best because I'm not able to do my job," he said.
It's a short week for the Jaguars, who only have five days to practice in between games. Trevor says he is doing everything he can "every second of the day to get back as soon as possible."
He addressed social media speculation about why he did not take a cart off the field. During Monday's game, video after the injury showed Lawrence badly limping, supported by two staff members as he walked through the tunnel after the game.
Memes flooded Twitter, suggesting that the team's cart was broken or lost. Some critics suggested the team "made" Lawrence walk to the locker room, or the team made a bad decision. Sports Illustrated posted an article calling it a "curious decision," and amplifying fans' concerns that the Jaguars might not have a cart at all.
Lawrence said that it was his decision to walk down the tunnel and he just wanted to get off the field.
He laughed it off: "Once I got in there, I'm like, 'this is a pretty long walk.'"
If Lawrence cannot play Sunday, he will be replaced by backup quarterback C.J. Beathard.
