JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In 2023, the Jacksonville Sharks celebrated a triumphant year, securing their 4th National Championship in franchise history. First Coast News had the opportunity to discuss the team's strategy for a potential repeat with Head Coach Jason Gibson.
Gibson acknowledged the perpetual target on Jacksonville's back, stating, "Jacksonville always has a target on its back. It's the Jacksonville Sharks. That's going to happen, moving to a new league, that's going to happen."
Entering a new season and a new league, the Jacksonville Sharks maintain their unwavering goal. Coach Gibson emphasized the importance of thorough preparation, stating, "When I knew we joined a new league, the first thing I did was watch film. Started calling the officials, started touching on the rules so I can be as prepared as I possibly can be."
"The Indoor Football League, now featuring 16 teams, presents a heightened level of competition with more games than the team is accustomed to," remarked Coach Gibson. He added, "There's a lot more teams, so you're looking to play eight teams in the playoffs. From coast to coast, San Diego to Boston to South Dakota."
Despite the challenges, Gibson opted to maintain continuity by retaining his entire staff and approximately 50% of the team. In his 24th coaching season, he adheres to a familiar system, emphasizing the importance of nurturing rookies. "Keep our core group of players—bring four or five rookies, develop them, keep them here. Now that those rookies are veterans, go out and find four or five more rookies."
"Ultimately, as far as I'm concerned, you block and you tackle. It's football. The guys that do it best win," concluded Coach Gibson. The Jacksonville Sharks embark on their journey in the new league with the aim of adding another championship to their storied franchise history.
