HAWTHORNE, Florida — At Hawthorne High School, one coach has propelled not one but two programs to championship heights.
Cornelius Ingram, who leads both the Hornets' football and girls' basketball teams, has become a cornerstone of athletic success in his hometown.
While his football team has excelled under his leadership, the spotlight now shifts to the girls' basketball team as the Hornets eye an unprecedented three-peat state title.
Ingram, a Hawthorne alumnus, knows what it means to represent the school on and off the court. A standout athlete during his time as a Hornet, he has carried that legacy into his coaching career, leading the girls' basketball team to multiple championships.
"Getting that third one is really important," Ingram said. "Not too many people have three."
The Hornets return three starters from last season's championship squad, with five experienced players overall. Ingram credits their success to resilience and motivation, often reminding them of the challenges they've faced.
"I've pulled out Facebook posts about negative things said about my girls, my team," Ingram said.
Players like senior guard De'Mya Adams say Ingram's unwavering commitment to excellence sets the tone for the team.
"He never lets me get too high. He always humbles me," Adams said. "I could have a 40-point game, and he'll tell me I did bad, missed one shot. He always keeps me steady and pushes us hard."
Senior forward Jhalea Jackson echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the bond between Ingram and the team.
"We love him so much. I think he's the best coach I've had," Jackson said.
While championship celebrations are sweet, Ingram says the true reward is coaching in his hometown and guiding players he's known since childhood.
"To be able to coach in my hometown where I graduated from with girls I know and a lot of them have grown up, it's a priceless thing for me, and I'll never take it for granted," he said.
As the Hornets chase history, Ingram's passion and dedication remain the driving force behind their success.
