JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The 2021 season was the last time the Edward Waters Football team started the season 1-0.
Toriano Morgan's squad not only beat the Morehouse Maroon Tigers on Saturday but did so in historic fashion.
Morgan's defense forced a school-record nine turnovers, including five interceptions and four forced fumbles, in the 28-11 win.
The EWU Tigers also celebrated its first victory as an official Division II school.
Coach Morgan emphasized last week that after back-to-back slow starts to the season, it was imperative that his team not dig itself into a hole early. And although it's just one win, it's a step in the right direction.
"This is a veteran team. These are guys that came in 2021-2022 and had to play young. They've taken their growing pains, so now they're at the point where the expectation is to win football games. That's where we're at in this stage of the program," Morgan said.
Fifth-year senior Dylan Lampkin said chemistry and urgency have improved since his first year.
"We developed in maturity. We're definitely a more physical team. Pretty much, we're closer. From my sophomore year to now, we're closer, and leadership has something to do with it," Lampkin said.
The Tigers hit the road on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Florida Memorial University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
