HS State Football Championship: Several First Coast teams fall short of a state title

On Friday, both Mandarin and Bradford County lost.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — On day two, Bragg Memorial Stadium buzzed with fervent high school football fans eager to be part of the culmination of the season, the State Championship game.

On Friday, a thrilling football match between Columbus and Mandarin, the game witnessed a series of compelling moments that culminated in a victory for Columbus over Mandarin with a final score of 38-19. 

The excitement commenced in Columbus' first drive when Hector Chavez powered through from inside the ten-yard line, securing a touchdown for the Explorers, establishing an early 7-0 lead.

Columbus continued their offensive prowess as Agyeman Addae capitalized on a handoff, adding another six points to the scoreboard.

Mandarin, not to be outdone, showcased their offensive strength with QB1 Tramell Jones Jr connecting with Jaime Ffrench Jr. in the endzone, securing a touchdown for the Mustangs.

By halftime, Columbus held a narrow lead over Mandarin, with the scoreboard reading 21-13 in favor of the Explorers.

The second half witnessed a back-and-forth of offensive displays. Agyeman Addae's impressive performance continued as he secured yet another touchdown for Columbus.

Mandarin's QB1 Tramell Jones Jr responded by finding Jaime Ffrench Jr in the endzone, adding crucial points for the Mustangs.

The third quarter saw Mandarin's Tiant Wyche's remarkable drive resulting in a touchdown for the Mustangs, showcasing their resilience.

However, in the fourth quarter, Jones' attempt was intercepted by the Explorers, further solidifying Columbus' dominance on both sides of the line.

Ultimately, the Explorers' cohesive performance proved decisive as they secured a 38-19 victory over Mandarin, displaying their prowess in a thrilling football clash. The Explorers got their revenge against the Mustangs as they took the 2023 State Title. 

This week, five years ago, Columbus lost to Mandarin, and they picked up their first title. Flash forward to now, Columbus didn't let Mandarin repeat history.
