The Flagler Women’s Golf Team made waves this season, reaching unprecedented heights by competing in their first-ever NCAA Division II National Tournament. The Saints’ extraordinary run culminated in the quarterfinals, marking a historic milestone for the team.
Dominating much of the spring season, the Saints consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally, peaking at an impressive No. 2.
"Seeing those rankings up there, and them believing that they earned it and deserve it, was amazing. It was nice to see their belief in themselves and their confidence up on the golf course it showed it," said head coach Santiago Cavanagh.
The Saints’ success was driven in part by the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, Stella Jelinek, who credited the team's mental toughness as a key factor in their performance.
“We are pretty strong at just doing our own thing and not worrying about everyone else. Coach always tells us to walk confident even if you are not playing good. Just show your team that you are really confident and that you are playing good because it can affect the team a lot,” said Jelinek, the Flagler sophomore.
While golf is typically seen as an individual sport, coach Cavanagh believes the team’s camaraderie has been crucial to their success.
“They like each other. They do a lot of things outside together. They push themselves at practices, and that's a changer of motivation for them to come on a day off or stay a little bit longer,” said the Peach Belt Coach of the Year.
Celebrating his 16th season at the helm, coach Cavanagh reflected on his evolving leadership approach.
"I've changed a lot of little things in my philosophy. I've changed a lot of things in the way we train, but the more I care for them, the more they'll care for me and the team. The better energy I bring, the better energy they will bring. It's just like in any other part," he said.
Looking ahead, the Saints are poised for another strong season as they return most of this year’s squad, having only one senior. The success of this historic season has also simplified recruiting, with coach Cavanagh already having his roster ready for the next campaign.
