Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson said quarterback Trevor Lawrence's right ankle injury that hushed Everbank Stadium Monday night is a high ankle sprain.
During a press conference Tuesday, Pederson took questions from the media regarding the injured quarterback. He said Lawrence did not have structural damage in his leg. He said surgery did not appear necessary at this point.
After the Jaguars' 34-31 overtime loss on Monday Night Football, Pederson was mum on the extent of Lawrence's injury. He said speak with the team's doctors Monday and have an update Tuesday.
Jaguars left tackle Walker Little stepped on Lawrence's ankle, causing it to twist. When Lawrence was helped to his feet, he immediately fell to his knees, ripping off and throwing his helmet on the field.
Lawrence was supported by staff on each side and badly limping. In the locker room after the game, Lawrence was using crutches and appeared able to put weight on the ankle.
Backup C.J. Beathard fumbled on his first play, but led the Jaguars into to tie the game late with a Brad McManus 40-yard field goal. Pederson said Beathard would get reps under center with the first team this week.
“Look, sometimes it’s just luck of being in the right place at the right time, picking his feet up at the right time. He’s obviously long, he’s tall, he’s very flexible as you imagine," Pederson said. "The one last night looked worse than it was really was, very fortunate there. He seems to have a little bit of a knack, but I just think for the most part, just been fortunate to not have a serious injury than what they are.”
Pederson said receiver Christian Kirk has a core muscle injury and is "going to miss some time" and the team is monitoring Little" left hamstring strain.
