Legendary Camden County football head coach retires

Jeff Herron leaves high school football with five state titles and over 330 wins.

KINGSLAND, Ga. — Camden County's legendary football head coach, Jeff Herron, has decided to step away from the game.

Herron announced his retirement on Friday morning on Kingsland radio station K-Bay 106.3, citing a significant reason—the toll of prostate cancer treatment, which has affected him both mentally and physically. Herron was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer two-and-a half years ago when he rejoined Camden County.

“The side effects of the treatments and the stress of managing a 7A football program have taken a toll on me both mentally and physically. While this past year was a magical season, I began to question whether I could continue to have the drive and passion that it takes to be the head coach that Camden County deserves.

For me, for any man I am sure, that is a hard thing to admit. But I love this community, this school, and the coaches and players and parents, and I want what is best for them. Selfishly, I am convinced that this decision is also what is best for me and my family," said Herron to K-Bay 106.3.

Herron leaves an unparalleled legacy, having won five state titles—three with Camden County and one each with Grayson and Oconee County high schools. His impressive head coaching career spans over 32 seasons in Georgia and South Carolina, accumulating over 330 wins.
