JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- After starting the final 12 games of last season, Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Demetrius McCray is facing high expectations entering his third NFL training camp.
However, the former small school prospect didn't let the hype impact how he prepared for this offseason.
"I just went into the offseason thinking the same way I think every offseason," said McCray. "Just knowing you have to compete every rep, every day. That's just my mindset all the time."
Competition will be the name of the game for the next several months as the Jaguars prepare for the preseason. McCray is one of three players competing to start opposite free agent addition Davon House at cornerback, according to head coach Gus Bradley.
McCray, Dwayne Gratz and Aaron Colvin all have experience in the league and have shown flashes when given the opportunity for playing time. That trio will be an interesting battle to watch in the spring.
"We just got out there every day and do our jobs," said McCray.
"We always know we've got to compete but we go [out on the field], do our jobs and eliminate mental mistakes and big plays."
Having House in the fold may help with limiting big plays. McCray notes that having House across from him and his teammates has helped them improve.
"It's a big help," said McCray.
"[He has] experienced a lot and we've experienced a lot too. It's always good to share each other's experiences and that'll help us better understand the game."
As McCray looks to hold onto the starting job, every rep in OTAs will go a long way in his mission to be featured on the first team.
