TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Legendary FSU baseball head coach Mike Martin passed away at the age of 79, less than three years after being diagnosed with Lewy body dementia.
Martin was the Seminoles head coach from 1980-2019, winning 2,029 games, becoming not only the winningest coach in college baseball history but the winningest coaching in NCAA history.
During his tenure, FSU won 19 conference titles, made 40 NCAA tournament appearances, and advanced to the College World Series 17 times. Regardless of all that success, Martin was never able to capture the national title.
Florida State named its baseball field in Martin's honor in 2005.
Martin is a member of the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, and the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame.
On top of all the Hall of Fame inductions, The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named its Coach of the Year trophy in his honor.
The school plans to hold a public celebration of Martin's life at Dick Howser Stadium.
