Florida Gators remain winless in the Swamp after losing to Texas A&M

The Gators are 1-7 in their last eight games.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida’s struggles continued Saturday as the Gators dropped a 33-20 decision to Texas A&M at The Swamp, further intensifying speculation about head coach Billy Napier’s future.

The Gators (1-2, 0-1 SEC) were outplayed on both sides of the ball, marking their second double-digit home loss this season.

Florida’s offense, led by quarterbacks Graham Mertz and freshman DJ Lagway, showed flashes but couldn't keep pace. Mertz finished 12-15 for 195 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, while Lagway completed six of 13 passes for 54 yards and two picks. Despite a third-quarter touchdown pass from Mertz to Elijhah Badger, cutting the deficit to 20-7, the Gators were unable to mount a significant comeback.

Defensively, Florida allowed 488 total yards, including 310 rushing yards, as they struggled to contain backup Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed. Reed, making his first collegiate start, accounted for three touchdowns, including a 73-yard pass in response to Florida's lone touchdown.

Coach Napier, now with a 12-16 record at Florida, acknowledged the mounting pressure. “Ultimately, it becomes about production,” he said. “This place has expectations, and we didn’t meet them today.”

With seven consecutive losses to Power Five opponents and mounting fan frustration, Napier faces growing uncertainty about his future in Gainesville.

Florida is winless at the Swamp in 2024 and have lost seven of their last eight games dating back to last season.
