JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — With Paxon and Atlantic Coast both aiming to secure their first-ever girls' basketball Gateway Conference Tournament title, the Lady Eagles succeeded in defeating the Stingrays 68-57.
On their way to the historic title, Paxon also triumphed over Ribault 61-60 in the semifinals, marking a historic moment for the program according to head coach Rod Carter.
"This is not traditionally known as an athletic school. But, in our journey, we discovered that no Paxon girls' team had ever beaten Ribault, and we got that first job last night. We really conquered our mental hurdle there," said Carter. "Nobody has ever hung up a Gateway District championship banner in that gym. This will be the first one tonight. So, it's a monumental win. I'm so proud of these girls. Great win for the team. Great win for the city. Great win for the school."
Paxon now boasts a 12-5 record for the season, having secured eight consecutive wins.
