JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Following Week 1's loss to the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars fans were frustrated with several of the team's issues. One such problem was kicker Jason Myers missing a field goal and an extra point, as the Jaguars attempted to even the score against the Panthers.
While those misses were killer, Myers wasn't the only kicker in the league to cost his team valuable points in Week 1. In fact, nine kickers missed at least one field goal during the first slate of games. Myers and three others missed newly-extended extra point attempts. A total of 12 kickers missed at least one field goal or extra point attempt in Week 1.
Myers also joined his former mentor Josh Scobee and former Florida State Seminole Graham Gano as the only kickers to miss more than one attempt this past weekend.
Kickers made just 53-of-64 field goal attempts during Week 1 which is good for nearly 83-percent. Theoretically, that's not a terrible number, but when you consider the consequences of some of those misses, it may leave you shaking your head.
Scobee's two missed field goals made the Pittsburgh Steelers attempt to comeback against the New England Patriots that much harder on Thursday night. Cody Parkey's 44-yard miss was the difference in the Philadelphia Eagles Week 1 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Myers' missed extra point killed the momentum for the Jaguars heading into halftime.
That said, only two of the four kickers that made 4-of-4 field goals this week won their games. While New York Giants kicker Josh Brown and New Orleans Saints kicker Zach Hocker made all of their attempts on Sunday, they still ended up on the losing end of the scoreboard.
Perhaps, Week 1 was an anomaly for kickers. However, those "specialists" clearly need to improve around the league or teams need to focus less on three points and strive to keep moving the ball, even on fourth down.
