VILANO BEACH, Fla. -- Something was spotted in the sky over St. Johns County last week that has people talking.
One man sent First Coast News video of what he saw. While he's skeptical, he wonders if it could be a UFO.
Last Wednesday and Thursday night, a man and his wife on Vilano Beach saw something in the sky. So they started recording video on a smart phone.
The video doesn't show much except for one little speck in the sky.
In the video, you can hear the man say, "I've never seen anything like it… very bright light. Slowly rising."
The couple was vacationing at Ocean Sands Beach Inn on Coastal Highway. They wanted to remain anonymous, but he told First Coast News as well as the hotel's front desk clerk about what they saw.
Debbie Whaley was that hotel clerk. "They had seen lights hovering overhead and flew over them at one time. They were pretty frightened."
Whaley said other people in the area have seen similar moving lights around Vilano Beach. She even had photos from the previous time.
"Back in early December, some people called and said they saw some of the same type of situation, lights coming in. One acts like it is distressed. One is going up and down, another comes in and out, hovers for a while and then darts off," Whaley said.
Chinese lanterns are often mistaken for UFO's, but Whaley has ruled out Chinese lanterns.
"I'm just saying what other people have seen. There seems to be more of a pattern or power to what this is," she said.
Whaley has never seen the lights, and she's not convinced they're little aliens. However, she wonders if it might have something to do with military aircraft which sometimes fly overhead.
"I think with all the military we have, with the base up in Mayport and Kings Bay in Georgia and NASA below us, I think there could be things checking us out," Whaley noted. "There's something out there besides the shrimp boats."
