ST. MARYS, Ga. --- The St. Marys City Council is expected to decide on a controversial industrial barge port on Monday night.
If this zoning proposal is passed - it would allow for the creation of an industrial barge port at the foot of the historic residential district in St. Marys - it would also lie next to the city's elementary school.
The property in question is an old Paper Mill - which spans over 700 acres - it's the second largest endangered wood stork rookery in Georgia.
The Mill is also listed as a listed Brownfield site - which the EPA defines as - any property that may be complicated by potential hazardous substance or contaminant
Residents say the proposal would impact the barge port interests of Brunswick, Jacksonville, and Fernandina.
The city council will vote on the issue Monday night at 6.
They moved the meeting to St. Marys elementary school to accommodate the large crowds.
More information on Monday's meeting can be found on the port's Facebook page.
