ID=32523507JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There is power in the afro puff!

That's the message a Jacksonville mom sent to her daughter after making her a superhero with powerful hair in a new comic book called "The Adventures of Moxie McGriff".

Natalie was just seven years old when she and her mom, Angie Nixon, began writing the story.

"She get her powers from the shampoo her Godmother gives her," Natalie said.

"Libraries are being eaten by monsters when they arrive for a field trip and she's going to save the libraries," Nixon added.

In an effort to save her daughter's self-esteem, Nixon came up with a plan the pair to write the book together.

"Issues related to her hair as well as her skin color and she also hated to read" were inspirations, Nixon said.

Those issues, she says, are long gone.

In April, the "Moxie Girls" won more than $16,000 dollars at One Spark to go towards getting the comic book published.

Nixon said their lives have changed tremendously.

"We are now going on a nationwide tour for Natalie. Life has changed for the better," Nixon said.

About 1,500 books had been sold at the time this story was published, according to Nixon.

The duo said they have also donated hundreds of books locally.

Nixon said a school system in Atlanta even placed an order.

She said her hope is to inspire children to read bigger words, more books and, most importantly, love themselves.
