GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Third Circuit State Attorney's Office has opted not to prosecute an Alachua County Sheriff's detective and sergeant embroiled in a domestic violence investigation following stemming from an incident back in July, authorities said Thursday.
Alachua County Sheriff's deputies were called to the home of Det. Zac Zedalis, who's running for sheriff, and Sgt. Kathy Zedalis July 30 to handle a domestic battery event, according to the Sheriff's Office. Afterward, the investigation into the complaint was handed over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for a neutral investigation.
At some point during FDLE's investigation, Sgt. Zedalis accused her husband of "tampering or harassing her" over statements she provided in connection to the case, deputies said in a news release.
FDLE later presented the agency's findings to State Attorney Jeff Siegmeister, who on Oct. 20 declined to prosecute the case, saying that the "interests of justice are best served in letting this be handled through the pending dissolution of marriage and any administrative internal affairs proceedings pending or to be instituted by the employing agency," the release said.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating both employees to find out whether either violated any department policies, rules or regulations over the course of the case. Both remain on paid suspension until the Sheriff's Office's investigation is complete.
Zac Zedalis, a former center on the University of Florida football team, is challenging sitting Sheriff Sadie Darnell in next year's election.
