DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — An 83-year-old man has been charged with murder after police said he killed a jewelry store clerk in Central Florida.
The Daytona Beach Police Department responded to The Volusia Gold and Diamonds jewelry store at 536 W International Speedway Blvd. Friday afternoon following reports of gunshots.
The department said their investigation revealed that John Craiger, 83, entered the business and got into a verbal altercation with the clerk behind the counter. Police said Craiger pulled out a gun and shot the clerk.
The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
After Craiger shot the worker, officers said a witness in the store pulled out a gun and exchanged gunfire with Craiger. Police said another witness snuck up behind Craiger and knocked him in the back of the head with a blunt object to subdue him.
Police said Craiger suffered multiple gunshot wounds and a cut to his head. The witnesses were not injured.
Craiger was charged with first degree murder and attempted first degree murder. He was transported to a nearby hospital.
