A human head that washed up on a South Florida beach Tuesday morning has been identified as a missing 19-year-old swimmer.
Victor Enrique Castaneda Jr. went missing near South Point Drive, Miami Beach last weekend after he and his sister got caught in a rip current, according to NBC 6 Miami.
A police spokesperson told NBC News Saturday that a good Samaritan saw the pair struggling in the water and saved Castaneda's sister first. When they went back for him, he had disappeared into the surf.
The Miami Beach Police Department searched the beach for hours but suspended their search when Castaneda was not located.
On Tuesday, a worker raking along Key Biscayne beach discovered a human head that washed ashore.
A medical examiner confirmed the remains were Castaneda Friday, NBC 6 reported.
A police spokesperson told NBC News that the investigation was ongoing and there is no indication of foul play.
Family members remembered Castaneda as kind and hardworking.
"He was an amazing student. He had so many dreams. He was gonna enlist in the Navy," Castaneda's older sister Jessica Castaneda told NBC 6.
Castaneda's family held a vigil Saturday evening to remember him, according to NBC 6.
