CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A 12-year-old girl saved herself and her four dogs from a house fire while getting ready for school Monday morning.

The Cape Coral Fire Department responded to the fire around 8:30 a.m. Monday. The fire department said the fire originated in the garage of a house on SW 7th Place in Cape Coral.

The child home at the time was getting ready for school when she smelled smoke, Cape Coral FD's Facebook post states. She quickly called 911 and safely evacuated herself and her four dogs. She was briefly hospitalized for minor smoke inhalation.

The fire department discovered that the fire originated from a television plugged into an extension cord in the garage.

"Remember to always plug appliances and major electronics directly into the wall or into a surge protector," the fire department added.
