TAVARES, Fla. — An Amber Alert in Florida has been canceled for a 5-year-old boy who has autism and is "semi-verbal." He was found safe, according to law enforcement.
Tavares Police said the search for Jace Saunders ended when his grandmother, Kelly Day-Dasilva turned herself and the boy in Monday morning at another police department nearby.
Jace is reportedly being taken in by the Department of Children and Families (DCF).
Dasilva previously was thought to have kidnapped the child and had an active warrant in Lake County for kidnapping and interfering with child custody, police said. She will be interviewed by Tavares police officers, the agency said.
Jace had been last seen around 1:19 p.m. Sunday on the south side of Tavares in the area of Summerall Park.
Jace was described as being about 3 feet tall, weighing about 55 pounds, and having brown hair and brown eyes. He had been last seen wearing a long-sleeved black shirt with a multicolored graphic and dark-colored pajama pants.
Police said they believed Jace was taken "unlawfully" by family during a DCF investigation.
Police said Jace's mother and father were also arrested late Sunday for reportedly interfering with child custody.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said previously they may have been traveling in a black Honda Accord with an unknown tag number. Authorities said if anyone sees Jace or Day-Dasilva, do not approach them; instead, contact law enforcement "immediately."
Anyone with information about Jace's whereabouts was asked to contact the Tavares Police Department at 352-343-2101 or 911.
