Florida police save dog locked in U-Haul while owners went to the beach

Police posted a video to social media Monday showing its officers pouring a water bottle into the mouth of the dog through a cracked window in the U-Haul truck.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A dog was found locked inside a U-Haul truck in Central Florida while its owners went to the beach Sunday, New Smyrna Beach police said.

The New Smyrna Beach Police Department released a video on social media Monday showing its officers pouring a water bottle into the mouth of the dog through a cracked window in the U-Haul truck.

The individuals who called the police told the responding officers the dog had been in the truck for nearly an hour. The police department said the temperature outside was 86 degrees at the time, estimating the inside of the truck to be 100 degrees or more.

The dog was safely removed from the truck and taken to the Southeast Volusia Humane Society.

Charging affidavits were sent to the State Attorney's Office for both owners of the dog.
