NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A 14-year-old was bitten by a shark in Ponce Inlet Monday, according to Volusia County beach safety and WESH 2 News. He's the third reported shark bite in Central Florida in a week.
The two other attacks, one on the Fourth of July and the other on Friday, hospitalized a 21-year-old man and a 26-year-old man. Both of those attacks occurred in New Smyrna Beach, widely considered the "Shark Bite Capital of the World."
Ponce Inlet, just north of New Smyrna Beach, is where the teenager was attacked while running into the ocean Monday morning. The boy was bitten on the calf after possibly spooking the shark, officials said.
The 21-year-old man attacked on the Fourth of July was bitten on his ankle while playing football in the ocean in knee-deep water, according to officials.
The 26-year-old was floating on an inner tube in about five feet of water when he was bitten, officials said.
