TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The governor hopes a new law and new leadership will help shape the future of juvenile justice here in Florida.
Tuesday, Governor Rick Scott announced Christy Daly would take the top spot at the Department of Juvenile Justice. She's currently serving as deputy secretary.
She takes over for Secretary Wansley Walters whose retiring at the end of this month.
Governor Scott also signed a bill Tuesday aimed at prevention and or rehabilitation of juveniles being disciplined.
"We want to make sure that our children have the opportunity to succeed and what they've done to try to improve juvenile justice has been remarkable," Scott said.
The new law takes effect July 1. According to the governor, recent data shows this is the lowest juvenile arrest rate Florida has had in the past 30 years.
