Angie Nixon takes Florida House District 13 primary in landslide win against Brenda Priestly Jackson

Voters choose between incumbent Angie Nixon and former Jacksonville City Councilwoman Brenda Priestly Jackson Tuesday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, secured the Florida House District 13 primary election win on Tuesday, after winning a highly contested race against former Jacksonville City Council member Brenda Priestly Jackson.

Nixon will now take on write-in candidate, Terrance Jordan, in the November general election.

With 81% of votes counted, the race was called for Nixon with nearly five times the votes as Jackson.

The race was embroiled in controversy and even entered the court room.

Last week former congresswoman, Corrine Brown, sued Nixon, claiming she played a role in the creation and distribution of fake quick picks that show Brown endorsing Nixon.

Brown said her real voter guide should show her endorsing Priestly Jackson.

Last Friday, a judge granted a temporary injunction against whoever printed fake Brown quick pick cards.

Nixon claims she and her campaign have nothing to do with the fake guides.

“Very disappointed that someone decided to give out fake quick picks. I never asked Congresswoman Brown for her endorsement-- I’m sorry that someone took it upon themselves to do that. But, you know at the end of the day I’m here for the voters and the voters decided that they want to send me back to Tallahassee," Nixon said at her watch party.

Nixon said she cut ties with Step to Success LLC, a local consulting firm also sued by Brown.

A spokesperson for Step to Success LLC confirmed Nixon cut ties with the organization but did not comment any further.

Priestly Jackson sent a statement to First Coast News Tuesday night.

“Although we worked and hoped for a different outcome, I wish the neighbors and community the best and success with Rep. Nixon. I’m at peace and will settle into this season with my husband and practicing law & educational advocacy.”

During her campaign, Priestly Jackson had said that Nixon had failed as a lawmaker, criticizing her ability to pass legislation and get state appropriations for her district.

Jackson received campaign donations from local members of the Republican Party, including City Council member Matt Carlucci and the 'Friends of Rory Diamond' political committee. Nixon said this was a sign that Republicans are trying to oust her.

"Why do Republicans in Tallahassee want to get rid of Angie Nixon?" she said, speaking about herself. "Because she is making too much noise and organizing our community to fight back for what is ours."
