JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —
Florida voters in the General Election have decided not to legalize recreational marijuana for adults over 21 years old. The Associated Press has announced that they are calling the vote and the measure has failed.
What would Amendment 3 have done?
The law allows Floridians who are of age to possess up to three ounces of marijuana and up to five grams of cannabis concentrate.
This would make Florida the 25th state to legalize recreational marijuana.
On the ballot, a "yes" vote supported legalizing marijuana under these stipulations. A "no" vote opposed legalizing marijuana for adult use.
If Amendment 3 passed, Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers would be authorized to sell marijuana to adults for personal use.
The Florida State Legislature could provide licenses to other businesses to cultivate and sell marijuana products.
Medical marijuana has been legal in Florida since the 2016 general election, when voters passed that amendment by 71%.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been an adamant opponent of the amendment, while former President Donald Trump said he supported it.
While incumbent Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott opposed the measure, his opponent, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell supports it. Kamala Harris has also said she believes it is time for marijuana to be legal in the United States.
