NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan cast her vote early Friday for Vice President Kamala Harris.
The mayor shared how she is used to being an 'Election Day voter,' however, she decided to play it safe and early vote incase of scheduling conflicts.
Deegan confirmed with First Coast News she cast her ballot for Harris, saying she's voting for "access to health care, affordable housing, love and unity."
"I have said it so many times together is our only way forward," Deegan explained. "We have got to see each other's humanity and love and respect each other regardless of our political beliefs."
Deegan described her early voting process as quick and easy. She early voted at the Beaches Branch Library in Neptune Beach, the same location where an 18-year-old was arrested for threatening an older woman with a machete. Deegan reassured the public that all voting locations are safe and voter intimidation is not tolerated.
"They [security] are going to make sure that people are protected and they're going to make sure that people can vote safely," she said. "So please don't allow incidents like that to keep you from coming out and exercising your right as an American."
Voters in Duval County still have time to early vote, as early voting locations close at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Recent data shows more than 200,000 people have already cast their ballot. St. Johns, Clay, Nassau, Putnam and Baker counties end early voting on Saturday.
Residents still have time to send their mail-in ballots if they arrive to the supervisor of elections office no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day. Military and overseas voters are allowed a 10-day-extension, but the mail has to be postmarked or dated by Election Day.
On Election Day, polling locations run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
