It’s time to cast your vote in the Florida Presidential Preference Primary

Before you head to the polls for the primary election, here’s what you should know about what’s on the ballot.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — It's time to cast your vote for the presidential candidate that will be on the ballot in the upcoming general election.

This year's Florida primaries are for registered Republicans only, and you may be wondering why--

That's because the Florida Democratic party only provided one name as their preferred candidate: President Joe Biden.

So if you're a registered Republican and you have not already voted by mail, you will see seven names on the ballot, including Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Former President Donald Trump is the only one still in the race. Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland explains why voters will see past Republican presidential candidates on the ballot.

“Of the seven, only six have suspended their campaigns, a lot of people think they've withdrawn, but technically suspended means they can still raise money, spend money, and they're still on the ballot and we will still tabulate the votes," he explained.

If you live in St. Augustine, you get to cast your vote not only for the presidential candidate for the upcoming general election but for a charter amendment, impacting police officers getting ready for retirement.

This amendment asks voters whether they are for - or against - moving the police officers' retirement system sections from the city charter to the municipal code.

Now no other changes would be made to the police pension rules and the St. Augustine city attorney says moving this would help streamline any changes that need to be made in the future.

"Anytime we want to make any sort of change in terms of how the Pension Board invests funds for the pension would require, again, a referendum question anytime we would change the dates of service of board members that would require a referendum question. So it becomes very tedious to do these sorts of referendum changes," said St. Augustine City Attorney Isabelle Lopez.

No matter your party affiliation, any registered voter who lives in the St. Augustine city limits can vote on this.

Tuesday is also the deadline to return your mail-in ballot, but for those who plan to vote in person, the polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
