HASTINGS (WTLV/WJXX) -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that happened late Sunday evening on Vaughn Ave. in Flagler Estates.
Police have identified the man shot as 58-year-old Rex Vernon Hess.
According to police the incident was between two men. Police say of the men was flown by air ambulance to Orange Park Medical Center in critical condition. Detectives are currently talking to the other individual.
Doug Cardin lives steps away from where the shooting happened, "I'm going should I get up because someone's always shooting something out here."
SWAT members were called to the scene as a police searched for the suspect.
"So we did not know where that individual was, so we called SWAT in to begin searching each one of those properties that were on that parcel of land., St. Johns County Sheriff's Office PIO Chuck Mulligan said.
Adding that the man police are interviewing is in the hospital after sustaining injuries in the fight.
"He was located without further incident from what I'm being told, but we have limitations of how far we could interview him at the time due to injuries and some other factors," Mulligan said.
Cardin said his neighbors have been there for years and typically keep to themselves, so hearing what happened overnight came as a surprise.
"I just wish the guy would be okay, he's my friend," Cardin said.
