Nearly a year after waking from a coma, Oakleaf man walks in Brooks Rehabilitation Challenge

Doctors said Drew Kohn he would never walk again after injuries he sustained during a motorcycle crash, but he walked Saturday during the Brooks Rehabilitation One Mile Challenge.

A man told he would never walk, talk or live a normal life met his goal to walk in Saturday's Brooks Rehabilitation One Mile Challenge race.

First Coast News has followed the story of Drew Kohn from the day of his accident.

Kohn was in a coma for 244 days following a motorcycle crash.

Nearly one year after waking up from that coma, First Coast News captured Kohn completing his personal challenge.

Two steps were the start of a goal to walk one mile. It's a goal that Drew Kohn and his mother Yolanda Kohn were once told could never be reached.

“He’s not supposed to walk. He has severed quad, he’s not supposed to, it’s not possible, but it is possible,” she said.

Drew Kohn, under his own power, is turning possibilities to reality.

“God is real, let me tell you that, I wouldn’t be here if not for God,” he said.

Kohn’s support system guided him on the path to recovery.

Drew Kohn’s football coach from Oakleaf High School, Derek Chipoletti, is amazed at what he can do.

“Watching him do that, step after step today, and pushing through, not always wanting to take the next step but forcing himself to do it, it was humbling to me, and I’m proud he asked me to be here today,” Chipoletti said.

Two years ago—a motorcycle crash left doctors thinking Drew was brain-dead.

Several broken bones and a traumatic brain injury.

Not able to walk, or talk, Drew Kohn spent eight months in a coma—before waking up last year.

“Sometimes during this process, you feel like there’s a plateau and you’re not making progress,” he said.

But his determination and faith, help deliver him to the finish line.

“This ordeal requires faith, it’s a faith walk, so what you saw Drew do today, it is a walking testimony of what God can do,” Drew Kohn said.
