Stories of Service: Teaching Wounded Warriors how to surf

Wounded Warrior Project partnered with Jax Surf & Paddle to give veterans a new experience.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — They served our country and now they're looking for something new.

Recently, nonprofit organization Wounded Warrior Project helped connect some local Warriors in a unique way that teaches them so much more than a new sport. It's a day at the ocean for a surf lesson with a bigger meaning.

"Today, we are working on connection," said Andie Coakley, an outreach specialist with Wounded Warrior Project. "Wounded Warrior Project works really hard to make sure that our veterans and their family members are connected to our community."

Wounded Warrior Project partnered with Jax Surf & Paddle for a cohort surf lesson for veterans to learn a skill and participate in an activity.

Navy veteran Leslie De La Serna told First Coast News it's valuable to do this activity with fellow Warriors.

"A lot of times, that doesn't happen unless you're around other warriors and people that understand what you're going through," said De La Serna. "So, getting out here, getting in the water, we all help one another and have a good time and forget all of our little woes."

Air Force veteran Michelle Therrien battles depression and isolation, but found comfort learning to surf.

"I love being outdoors, so this was perfect," she said. "It was great timing and it's easy to get back into the swing of things of being outdoors. If I can start with people I know, I can be comfortable and be myself with."
